Grounds Maintinance

Well, July gave us record-breaking temperatures – followed by the usual rain!

Great news for your grassland areas which may well resemble a jungle by now!

Fortunately, at Contego Response we understand the importance of good and effective grounds maintenance.

We use our pest control knowledge of rodents to produce a bespoke grounds maintenance package for your company.
This not only keeps your site looking its best, but also reduces harbourage points for rodents and insects.

We offer the following services:

  • Strimming
  • Grass cutting
  • Pruning
  • Herbicidal (weed control)
  • Litter Picking

We can provide these treatments as a one off service or as a fully tailored programme of site care services.

We offer total weed control in the fight against hardy foes with serious reputations such as Japanese Knotweed, Ragwort, Giant Hogweed and Himalayan Balsam as well as specialist lawn care.

Did you know that Ragwort is one of 5 “Injurious weeds”? If eaten, it is potentially fatal to certain livestock, particularly horses.

Under the Weeds Act 1959 the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs can, if satisfied that injurious weeds are growing upon any land, serve a Notice requiring the occupier to take action to prevent the spread of those weeds. An unreasonable failure to comply with a notice is an offence.

The Weeds Act applies to:

• Common Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea)
• Spear Thistle (Cirsium vulgare)
• Creeping or Field Thistle (Cirisium arvense)
• Curled Dock (Rumex crispus)
• Broad-Leaved Dock (Rumex obtusifolius)

These can be a particular concern for large, open areas such as landfill sites where these weeds can not only spread quickly, but can seed into neighbouring land.

The provisions of the Weeds Act only apply to Common Ragwort and do not apply to other ragwort species. Other species of ragwort may be equally toxic to horses or other livestock, but are less common or relatively rare. In some situations they may need to be controlled. Some species, such as Fen Ragwort, are protected. It is important to make correct identification of Common Ragwort before considering any control measures.
