What Are The Most Common Pests Where You Live?

A few years ago, the home interiors company Hillarys carried out a study to find out what the most common pests were in different parts of the UK. Let's have a look at the most common pests where you live.

The most common pests where you live

Northern Ireland

Rats are the most common pests that you might be inadvertently sharing your home or business with. A few years ago, there was a huge increase in rat-related pest control callouts. Increased rainfall and an increase in building work was to blame. Rain forces rats above ground and building work disturbs them and forces them to go on the hunt for somewhere else to nest.

Scotland

Pest birds are the most common blot on your landscape. From gulls to feral pigeons, fed up Scots have to deal with noise, property damage, droppings, and aggression from pest birds most often.

Wales

Rats are the most commonly reported pest across Wales too. In Wales, there are more sheep than people, and all of those farm buildings are rich pickings for rats. They have plenty of places to nest and grain stores to raid.

South West England

Wasps are the pests that make your life a misery most often. Warmer temperatures in the south mean that wasps can thrive. Not good news for your summer BBQs and picnics.

London

Bed bugs are the most common pests that pest controllers are called out for. This is not surprising. Bed bugs feed off humans, so simply put, you'll find them where there are a lot of people. London is also a national and international travel destination, so the pests are easily transported from person to person and from one hotel or office to another.

The Midlands

The unlucky residents of the Midlands get to share their homes and businesses with cockroaches more than they would probably like. Cockroaches are hardy pests and can survive for 100 days without food. They can even survive for a period of time without a head! Good luck dealing with them on your own.

North of England

Mice and ant infestations are among the most commonly reported pest problems. Lucky northerners get to deal with two common pests. Who said it was grim up north?

Do you agree with the survey's findings? Even though it might be a little unsettling to think that your property is prone to bed bugs or that your property could be overrun by mice, knowledge is power. Now you know what the most common pests are where you live, you can take action to prevent them.

Do you have a pest problem in your home or business?
