Renfrewshire Council - Bird Proofing & Environmental Clean
THE PROBLEM
A derelict building in a central city location in Scotland, consisting of multiple flats and a loft, was plagued by significant pigeon activity. The entire site was heavily contaminated with guano, and there were numerous ingress points, including holes in the roof, floors, and windows. This situation required extensive cleaning and bird-proofing measures to restore the building to a safe and habitable condition.
THE SOLUTION
To tackle the severe pigeon infestation and ensure thorough cleaning of the fouled areas, our technicians implemented a comprehensive bird proofing and environmental cleaning plan. The project was carried out over several days, with the following steps:
Installation of Bird Proofing Systems:
- Day 1: Initial assessment of the site to identify ingress points and areas with the heaviest pigeon activity. Installation of crawl boards across holes in the floor for safe access.
- Day 2: Installation of the wiring system for the roof net, using M6 barrel strainers and eye bolts for secure fixings. Recommendation for post-clean that the floors be re-boarded to ensure long-term safety and integrity.
- Day 3: Completion of the remaining wiring and installation of 6mm weldmesh on windows to prevent pigeon entry. All waste was bagged and disposed of properly.
- Day 4: Attachment of roof nets and drop nets across the building. General floor sweep conducted to prepare for more intensive cleaning.
- Day 5: Continued installation of bird-proofing systems, including a tensioned bird wire around the perimeter of the building. Final netting installation and securing all entry points with weldmesh.
- Day 6: Final installation of bird-proofing measures, including additional weldmesh where necessary. Ensuring all nets and wires were properly tensioned and secured.
Environmental Cleaning:
- Scraping and sweeping of all affected areas to remove guano.
- Thorough washing of contaminated areas with disinfectant biocide to remove stains and sanitize the environment.
- Scrubbing and rinsing of floors and other surfaces to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Removal and disposal of approximately 2 tonnes of waste generated during the cleaning process.
THE RESULT
The comprehensive bird-proofing and cleaning efforts led to the successful deterrence of pigeons from the derelict building in Scotland. The installation of nets, wires, and weldmesh effectively prevented pigeons from entering and roosting in the building. The extensive environmental cleaning removed all guano, leaving the building clean and hygienic. The work was completed within the allocated timeframe, resulting in a significantly improved and safer environment, with a satisfied client who appreciated the thoroughness and effectiveness of the solutions provided.
